What I like about Protestantism
On that same thread that spurred yesterday's post, I was challanged to list what I like about Protestnatism. I went one better, and tried to list what it is I don't like about Orthodoxy. Here is that post:
OK in the interest of fairness and living up to Ryan's challenge: This is a hard challange to be sure, even though I have been Orthodox for 10 years. For I truly believe the Orthodox Church, is the God-protected Church of Pentecost. All of the things I don't like about what I experience in Orthodoxy, is where we are not living up to the deposit of Faith within the CHurch. SO the problem isn't the CHurch, but the sinful people in the Church.
(starting with myself)
Things that drive me nuts about Orthodoxy:
1) Ethnicism/Phylitism
2) Institutionalism
3) Nominalism
4) Control/ownership
5) modernism/secularismn
6) hyper-traditionalism/legalism
I think thats it.
Things I appreciate my Protestantism:
1) Personal encounter
2) Study of the Scriptures
3) Understanding of the culture (although its often the negative of being seduced by the culture)
4) Love driven Evangelism
And I think thats it.

at any rate, i'd agree with your list. altho one of the things that was so freeing for me in converting to orthodoxy was that i could let go all of the ambivalence and angst and critique of "the church" that i carried around as a protestant, and begin a much more fruitful critique of my own life. realized that much of my energy in critiquing "the church" was a distraction from the real work of repentance. i'm so incredibly glad to have entered the orthodox church, where there is such a holistic and rich context for life-creating spiritual disciplines.
Yes! THanks for the note. Tell Spence FDR says hi, and I will ck out your blog....
