What Happened to the church

I like Gina's thoughts here (and the fact that I get to see my self quoted on a blog!)

...the process radically broke down round about Constantine's time, survived by bits and pieces of true faith in a sea of corruption and tyranny, and ultimately had to be rescued by the English and Germans centuries later, today to be safeguarded mostly by a few Americans. Yes, I'm being a bit sarcastic here, but isn't it a pretty accurate assessment?
